Irritated every time you log into LinkedIn? Try these five game-changing tips to make LinkedIn worth your time.

Updated: May 10

You’ve seen others in your industry getting leads from LinkedIn and you know you should have a presence there because its where your ideal clients are (especially compared to other platforms like Instagram, Threads, X, YouTube, and Tik Tok).

Even though you know that, you can't help but feel overwhelmed or irritated by it. You're not the only one. I hear small business owners complain about seeing irrelevant content and the quantity of self-promotional posts. Plus, the platform's constant rollout of new features is hard to navigate. As a result of all of this, it can be easier to put it off than to take any action at all.

LinkedIn doesn’t have to be a headache. With the right strategies, it can become a powerful tool for generating leads and growing your business. In this blog post, I'll provide five solid strategies to make the platform less overwhelming and worth your time.

Once you learn how to use LinkedIn strategically, your feed won’t be clogged with irrelevant posts or random updates from people you haven’t worked with in years. You won’t be staring at a blank page wondering what to post, and you’ll know exactly who to message.

As a result, you will look forward to opening LinkedIn because you'll know how to use it to book calls and grow your business.

1) Stay focused on your goal for using LinkedIn.

There are so many ways to use LinkedIn, from contributing to collaborative articles to hosting LinkedIn lives and more. It's easy to get distracted when you spend time on the platform. However, since your main goal on LinkedIn is to book discovery calls, staying focused will save you time, reduce overwhelm, and get you the results you actually want.

Remember: you're not on LinkedIn to amass loads of followers or go viral!

This means you don’t need to fall in love with LinkedIn – you just need to figure out how to use it to serve your business (by getting you leads and clients) and that feels good to you.

You don’t need to engage with every post, respond to every notification, or focus on drastically increasing your follower count. Keeping lead generation as your top priority helps you stay strategic, directing your attention to only those actions that directly support your business.

Pro tip: Set a goal for your LinkedIn efforts each week, such as sending 10 messages and publishing two posts. This helps prevent LinkedIn from feeling like a never-ending hamster wheel.

By the way, if writing two posts a week feels daunting or time-consuming, check out this related article where I share how to spend less time on LinkedIn and start getting leads.

2) Add relevant connections for your current business.

I recommend growing your networkand simultaneously making LinkedIn more interestingby connecting with people who could directly benefit from your services and potentially become clients.

You should also add connections who influence or reach your ideal audience, like peers and industry leaders.

For example, if you're a content strategist for startups, you might connect with the following:

  • Potential clients: startup founders and heads of marketing

  • Peers: other content strategists for startups, especially those who have slightly different offerings (e.g. those who focus on email when you focus on blogs)

  • Industry leaders: CMOs and CEOs in the industry you serve, content strategists with large followings, authors and other service providers your ideal clients look up to

By curating your network, it will become full of relevant content. Plus, when your network is filled with the right people, it’s easier to connect, engage, and show up authentically, knowing you’re speaking to the audience that cares about what you have to say.

Pro tip: Don't forget to also remove irrelevant connections to improve the content you see and how your posts get distributed. I share more about how to do that in this "ultimate guide" to removing connections on LinkedIn.

3) Tell the LinkedIn algorithm which content you like and which content you never want to see again.

If you’re tired of seeing content in your feed that doesn’t resonate, unfollowing or muting that content will help you see better content in the future. LinkedIn lets you stay connected to people without “following” them, so you don’t have to feel bad, or worry about hurting your reputation, for doing so.

By refining your feed, you’ll start to see useful insights, relevant discussions, and industry news that help you engage meaningfully. And when your feed is less cluttered, LinkedIn becomes a more pleasant and fruitful place to be since the content is more relevant.

Pro tip: if you find yourself getting spammed over and over by the same culprits, especially via the message feature of the platform, don't hesitate to block them. Blocking them is your way of making LinkedIn a less cluttered place. That's your right on the platform, so you shouldn't feel bad about it!

4) Prep your content in advance.

Preparing your content in advance (also called “batching” content) makes LinkedIn so much easier to manage, especially because you’re busy.

In my own business, for example, I prepare my content 3 months in advance so I don’t need to worry about it on a day-to-day basis. In my program Leads on LinkedIn, I share exactly how I do this and share resources such as a content tracker, strategies to write posts faster, and "behind-my-shoulders" tutorials to help you do the same.

Batching your content frees you up to focus on other areas, and it helps you stay consistent with your messaging. Plus, when your content is ready to go, it’s easier to show up and engage without scrambling to think of what to say. By the way, you can still write on-the-fly posts when you have pre-scheduled content.

Pro tip: Always schedule your posts on the same day of the week and at the same time (e.g., Tuesday and Thursday at 8:45 a.m.). This eliminates guessing when you will publish your content, helping you stay consistent and visible for the long haul.

5) Focus on certain features, and ditch the rest.

LinkedIn has many features, but not all will effectively serve your goals. For example, you might have recently seen features like collaborative articles, video and audio lives, newsletters, games, and more.

As a LinkedIn Coach, I always monitor the platform's trends. I read the LinkedIn Algorithm report, follow other experts, and study content strategy so that I can share updated trends when they become relevant to you. I do this so you don't have to get wrapped up in this time-consuming research.

Instead of doing trial-and-error yourself, I want you to focus on the tried-and-true strategies that we know drive results without spreading yourself too thin and wasting your precious time.

In this related article, I share my Profile to Pipeline framework and how it helps you book discovery calls for your small business.

You might be wondering… “Ok, I want to book discovery calls from LinkedIn. But where  do I start?”

The best place to start finding clients on LinkedIn is by optimizing your LinkedIn profile.

Before diving into posting or messaging, refining your profile messaging ensures that anyone who lands on your profile instantly understands what you do, who you help, and why you’re the best fit for their needs. When your profile is set up to attract the right people, you'll naturally add relevant connections and write content that attracts them.

In my service LinkedIn Profile Refresh, I review more than 30 sections of your profile to make sure it clearly communicates your expertise, showcases real results you’ve achieved, and guides potential clients toward the next step in working with you.

You'll provide some basics about your business, which I'll then take to provide highly strategic, word-for-word recommendations to upgrade your profile. I'll even hand-select short tutorial videos (1-3 minutes each) so you know exactly how to make the changes I suggest within LinkedIn.

No more staring at your profile wondering what’s missing—I’ll take care of it so you can start seeing real results from the work you're already putting into posting and messaging LinkedIn. The process takes about 3 weeks from start to finish.

After optimizing your profile, I recommend building a LinkedIn strategy. Through my coaching program Leads on LinkedIn, you will become comfortable navigating LinkedIn to find right-fit clients for your business.

We focus on two main skills - LinkedIn posting and direct messaging. These skills bring the right clients into your orbit so you can consistently grow your business without relying on time-consuming strategies like video and expensive strategies like ads. You won't have to focus on all of LinkedIn's featuresmy clients love that I share exactly what to focus on to get results.

The program includes the following:

  • Actionable curriculum: learn step by step how to identify leads, craft effective posts, and manage your direct message conversations

  • Time-saving templates: instead of staring at a blank screen, start with inspiration for every direct message and post you write.

  • Direct message feedback: get feedback leads on the messages you are sending on LinkedIn to improve your response rates and book calls

  • Post critiques: get critiques on the posts you write to ensure your messaging is clear so you build trust with your ideal clients and referral partners.

  • Ongoing email access: get personalized guidance any time a question arises, so you keep making progress.

Within just a month, you'll have identified and contacted 30 prospects for your business. You'll have the skills and systems to do it again whenever you want an influx of leads. And, this rinse-and-repeat process gets more effective every time you do it!

LinkedIn doesn't have to be an irritating place. With the right strategies and support, you’ll focus on high-ROI activities that get results without sucking your time or causing you to feel frustrated. As a result, you'll feel good about going on LinkedIn because you know it advances your goals and grows your business.
